This high profile project involved the full refurbishment of an existing Grade II listed hall and a new build, state of the art spa and wellness retreat.
R N Wooler transformed the historic hall into a luxury ‘Relais Chateaux’ hotel, offering exquisite rooms and suites and an extensive and diverse range of dining options.
R N Wooler’s specially trained craftsmen painstakingly refurbished all the windows in the hall in order to maintain their beautiful character. All the bedrooms are adorned with stunning bespoke features and intricate joinery.
The bridal suite at the centre of the hall is a masterpiece; designed over two levels with vast ceilings, offering unequivocal character and comfort.
The linked new build spa consists of an 18 meter indoor swimming pool, an indoor to outdoor vitality pool, sauna, steam room, snow room, varied treatment rooms, dining and relaxation areas and a pioneering Elite executive gym and strength room.
Furthermore, within the retreat there are a number of opulent bedrooms, including the magnificent ‘Presidential Suite’.
Particular highlights of the spa construction are the coral render ceiling, imported from Barbados, and the curved glass canopy roof to the first floor.
Such an extensive and eminent project can bring many challenges. Work to a Grade II listed building requires a unique mix of heritage and contemporary techniques, undertaken to the highest quality, to meet the required standard of such a revered five star hotel.
One challenge of the project was the complex structural work required to link the new spa with the existing hall.
Moreover, the extensive basement works were below the water table. Therefore, secant piling and innovative waterproofing systems were utilised.
The project programme commenced whilst detailed design was in it’s infancy, and the design continued in parallel with construction. Such practice required intimate and closely controlled communication to allow swift design development. This innovative solution allowed the hotel to trade twelve months earlier.
The Grantley site was registered under the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CSC) and achieved a ‘Beyond Compliance’ status.
The opening of Grantley Hall in the Summer of 2019 was of national importance and the hotel has been described as a ‘jewel in Yorkshire’s crown’.
